Leverage is the feature that draws many newcomers to forex trading. It lets a trader control a large position with a relatively small deposit. That same mechanism, however, is why account balances can shrink far faster than most people expect.
What leverage means in the forex market
In the forex market, currencies are traded in lots. A standard lot represents 100,000 units of the base currency. Few retail traders hold that much cash, so providers allow them to borrow exposure. A ratio of 30:1 means each unit of capital controls thirty units of currency.
The deposit set aside to open the trade is called margin. It is not a fee. It is collateral that the provider holds while the position stays open. With 30:1 leverage, the required margin is roughly 3.33% of the position value.
ESMA limits for retail forex trading
In the European Union, ESMA restrictions cap the leverage available to retail clients on CFDs. The limits are tiered by asset volatility:
• 30:1 on major currency pairs
• 20:1 on non-major pairs, gold and major indices
• 10:1 on other commodities and non-major indices
• 5:1 on individual equities and 2:1 on crypto
The rules also require a margin close-out and negative balance protection for retail accounts. A close-out means positions are cut when equity falls to a set fraction of required margin. Negative balance protection means a retail client cannot lose more than the money in the account.
EU forex brokers must also publish the percentage of retail accounts that lose money. When ESMA introduced the measures, it cited studies showing that 74–89% of retail accounts lost money. Those figures explain why regulators focused so heavily on leverage.
Why losses scale so quickly
Leverage magnifies the outcome of every price move, in both directions. Consider a trader with 1,000 units of account currency using 30:1 leverage. That trader controls a position worth 30,000. A 1% move against the position costs about 300, or 30% of the account.
A move of just over 3% would erase the whole deposit. Major pairs can move that much during volatile weeks. Central bank surprises, inflation data and geopolitical headlines all trigger such swings. Gaps over a weekend can skip past a stop-loss entirely.
Costs add to the pressure. Spreads and commissions are charged on the full forex position, not the margin. Overnight swap charges also apply to the leveraged amount. Over several weeks, these costs can quietly erode a small account.
Using leverage with caution
Maximum leverage is a ceiling, not a target. Many experienced participants in forex trading use far less than the permitted ratio. They size positions so that a normal daily move does not threaten their equity.
Fintech has made opening an account fast and cheap. Mobile apps let users fund an account and trade within minutes. That convenience can hide how much exposure sits behind each tap. Some fintech platforms now display real-time margin levels, which helps users see risk more clearly.
When comparing forex brokers, it is worth checking how margin calls are communicated and at what level close-outs occur. Understanding these mechanics before placing a trade is part of responsible forex trading.
Because leverage multiplies every move, a leveraged position can lose money quickly and wipe out a deposit within hours.
